“Read me the Apple code.”

A supposed Apple support agent says a code will stop an account attack. A genuine code can be triggered by someone else and does not authenticate the caller.

What they want

Your account verification code or approval of an unexpected sign-in.

YOUR NEXT MOVE

Check through another route.

Do not share the code. End the call and contact Apple through the Support app or support.apple.com. Apple Support does not ask for your account password or verification codes.
