THINK SMARTERABOUT SCAMS

RECOVERY & REPORTING

You deserve help,
not a lecture.

Stop contact with the scammer. Tell someone you trust. Choose the step that matches what happened.

Immediate danger? Call 911 in Canada, the United States or Mexico. Reporting websites are not emergency services.

I paid or shared card details

Contact your bank, card issuer or payment provider immediately using its official number or app. Ask about blocking further charges and reversing or recalling the payment. Keep receipts and transaction details. Recovery is not guaranteed.

I shared a password or verification code

From a trusted device, change exposed and reused passwords, review signed-in devices and enable multi-factor authentication. Contact the affected service through its official recovery channel. For Apple, use trusted account settings or iforgot.apple.com if locked out.

I let an app access my account

Revoke unfamiliar app permissions in the account’s security settings. A password change alone may not remove access granted to an app. Check for unexpected account activity and contact the account provider.

I installed software or ran commands

Stop using that device for banking or other sensitive activity. Get trusted technical help to remove unwanted access and check the device. Use a different trusted device to secure accounts and contact your bank.

I clicked, but entered nothing

Close the page. If you downloaded something, granted permissions or notice suspicious behavior, seek trusted technical help. Do not go back to investigate the suspicious site.

I shared identity documents

Contact the document issuer and follow your country’s identity-theft guidance. In Canada, contact both credit bureaus for identity fraud. In the U.S., use IdentityTheft.gov to create a recovery plan.

My phone unexpectedly lost service

Contact your mobile provider from another phone, especially after suspicious account activity. Ask it to check for unauthorized SIM changes or number transfers, and secure linked accounts.

Report in your country

Reporting and account recovery are separate steps. A report will not automatically block a card, stop a transfer or secure your account.

Canada

Report cybercrime and fraud ↗
Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: 1-888-495-8501. Contact local police and keep the file number.

Mexico

Guardia Nacional cybercrime guidance: 088 ↗
For financial-service advice or complaints: CONDUSEF, 55 53 400 999 ↗. Contact your bank separately about transactions.

Be wary of the next offer.

Unsolicited “recovery experts” may target people who have already lost money. Do not pay someone who guarantees to recover it. Preserve messages and receipts without continuing the conversation with the scammer.
